On Saturday, April 6th, from 11:30am to 4pm, Five Points Museum of Contemporary Art brings the 2019 Victoria Art Car Parade with a FREE family event and parade. Ann Harithas, founder and Executive Director of the museum has been a judge at the annual Orange Show Houston Art Car Parade for over 25 years and is also founder of the Art Car Museum in Houston. For the 2019 Victoria Art Car Parade, Harithas has organized award-winning art cars from noted car artists for display both at Jam Fest 2019 downtown, and on North Moody Street in and around the Five Points Museum with a new exhibition by Houston artist Mark Bradford. Featured in the parade in years past, Bradford’s walking contraptions, otherworldly beings and wall sculptures will be on display inside the museum, inviting everyone to see up close how Bradford takes discarded scrap metal and gives it new life. There will also be kids’ crafts areas hosted by MAP and refreshments.
The parade begins at 11:30 AM in Downtown Victoria and will be followed by an art car festival and the opening of a new exhibit by Mark Bradford at Five Points Museum located at 1201 N. Moody.
Festivities will kick off with Victoria’s 8th annual Art Car Parade downtown. After the parade some art cars will park so Jam Fest 2019 visitors can take a closer look. The rest of the parade cars will proceed to Five Points Museum at Moody and North Street for the museum exhibition opening.
The more than 50 art cars and low riders on exhibit will display a variety of painting and sculptural techniques, including welding and metal craft, gluing and assemblage, and collage. Art cars scheduled to appear include multiple works by David Best, “Our Lady of Transportation” by Amber Eagle and exquisitely detailed lowriders by the Leal Brothers from Corpus Christi. All the art cars have won top honors at the Orange Show Houston Art Car Parade and several can be found on display at various times at Five Points Museum.
From April 6 through June 30, Five Points Museum of Contemporary Art will be exhibiting the sculpture of Mark Bradford. Known by his nickname, “Scrapdaddy”, Bradford’s work has been exhibited in museums around the world, He has worked in Texas for over three decades drawing upon the scrapped and discarded remains of commerce and industry and transforming them into creatures, vehicles and other sculpture that is recognizable in its source material yet completely novel in its repurposing.
Five Points Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 1201 North Moody in Victoria, TX and is open to the public 12-5pm Wednesday through Sunday. Admission to the museum is always free.
